Part 4: The Casts Revisited

Aug. 25, 2000 the casts went back on. This time we weren't playing around. The day started at 4:00 am. We were to be there by 6:00 for an 8:00 surgery. We drove to Scottish Rite Children's Hospital in Atlanta. We went and signed in at the day surgery and waited. Soon they called us to the back, Katie was in and out of sleep and Terri and I nervously awaited Dr. Kehl's arrival.

About 8:30 am he greeted us, did some paper work and told us that someone would be coming for Katie momentarily, and left to get ready for surgery. Soon they came to take Katie and assured us that they would call every hour and let us know how she was doing. We had nothing left to do but to walk up to her room and wait.

The surgery was to consist of making a slice on each foot so that they could go in and move the bones and tendons to the correct locations. They would then place pins in her feet to hold them in place, sew up the opening and finally wrap each foot in a cast.

For the first few hours they called every hour to let us know how Katie was doing. Both sets of Katie's grandparents came to sit and wait with us to make sure that their first grandbaby would be OK.

At about 1 p.m. we were informed that we would have to change rooms, there was some mix-up and we were in the wrong section of the hospital. Needless to say, we changed rooms. We told the nurse that we wanted to make sure that the Dr. knew we were in a different room so we could keep on getting our updates but we never heard from the O.R. again until the surgery was over.

Dr. Kehl came up to the room after the surgery to let us know how everything went (just fine) and to let us know he would see us tomorrow. So Terri, Katie, and I got ready for a long night in the hospital.

The next day we were released and went back home.

On September 7th we went back to the Dr.'s office to have the casts re-wraped and she was back to the pink casts. They had to re-wrap them since they put slight splits up and down each side so that Katie's feet could swell and go back to normal size without much pain.
